Espargos
Espargos is the capital city of the island municipality of Sal in the heart of the island.
Its name in Italian means "asparagus" and refers to the wild vegetable asparagus stalk with its yellow flowers that grows in sandy areas around the island.
And 'it situated in the heart of the island, near the international airport AmÃlcar Cabral, the international gateway for the entire archipelago.
The airport was conceived from an idea of ​​Benito Mussolini, as it saw fit to use Cape Verde, and particularly the island of Sal as a hub for its flights between Europe and South America.
The idea took shape in 1939 when it was granted to the Italian government authorization by the Portuguese colonial government and departed with several installations of prefabricated, but due to the Second World War, the Italian involvement in the construction of the airport ceased.
Subsequently, in 1945, the Portuguese government bought the plant from the Italian airport, ultimandone well construction and rendondolo fully operational in 1949.
The airport, since then, has undergone improvements and always close to it were built small houses by workers of the same mainly from Sao Nicolau built that gave the area the name of "Preguiça", named after their native village.
To date, the small town has nearly 20,000 inhabitants and is named official Espargos, the main commercial center and the government of the island.
